Understanding Search Engine Optimization – What Is and What Is Not

Search Engine Optimization the buzzword that is responsible for creating millions of jobs, and thousands of companies. In any corner of the Internet you will see this word and/or the abbreviation SEO. Many things has been said, and written about SEO. The main concept is to increase a website ranking in the search engine result pages (SERP’s) for a given keyword in order to increase the website traffic.

Now, I won’t talk about something you already know. My intention is that after reading this the reader would understand what is Search Engine Optimization as a service and what is not.

Back in the days, I am talking 1998, 1999, and 2000. The most used engine was AltaVista, and then it was Yahoo until Google was born in 2004 and changes the search engine game. Now not only Google change the game, it actually took control over the world daily online searches. All the bells and whistles of a new data, more crawling than any other search engine. It actually made Yahoo say that they where not a search engine but a web portal. Google was actually register in 1998 as a private held company, is not until 2004 when the company did their initial public offering.

When all this was happening Search Engine Optimization was present. Well it was not called like that. Many companies wanted to be ranking for a specific keyword, to increase their client base, and their website traffic. One of the earliest forms of PPC (if we can call it liked that) was paying for the keyword. Companies would pay a substantial amount of money and when someone typed the word on the browser bar it will take them directly to the website who was paying for this keyword.

Now in those days ranking was archive by using the Meta tags efficiently and the weight of a keyword in the content. Yes, it was like that. The more your keyword was present, the better. Now this technique is consider spam and engine crawlers flag does sites.

In simple terms Search Engine Optimization is nothing new, for many people it is and it will continue to be.

So what is Search Engine Optimization as a service?

First let me explain in short what is Search Engine Optimization. The SEO is a combination of techniques. This includes but not limited to following:

Content Creation or Content Re-Writing

Natural Link Building

There are other techniques around, but these are the principals. These basic 4 techniques can be called “On-Site Optimization” and “Off-Site Optimization”.

Now Search Engine Optimization as a service. Is when a consultant provides you with the labor of these tasks. Many companies and/or consultants will out source part of the work, while others will do it internally.

Now what is not Search Engine Optimization as a service?

Unfortunately the market has been saturated with single tasks and sold as SEO. An article writer would offer his service directly to possible Product Management Consulting Rates clients as SEO service. A link builder would offer his service directly and call it SEO. Hey, even designer are creating SEO ready templates.

What a business owner doesn’t know is that the results could vary, and at the end it will end up costing more than hiring a consultant and/or company that will offer the complete service.

Beware of single services. Hire a consultant and/or company. If you want results that could be measure, don’t go with single services. Not everything is SEO. I know is sounds great and you want it for your website, you want more traffic, more sales or leads. Also beware with the so-called SEO packages. It might sound great to pay $99.99 and you will get high rankings. But in reality this is not true.

If you looking to increase your website traffic, sales or leads, even you trying to make your message reach more people. Hire a SEO Consultant! Don’t buy separated services. Remember Search Engine Optimization is combination of services.
